This fact sheet describes the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), an intergovernmental organization serving 19 member states in the Americas. Its mission is to pursue "princípios de excelência e integridade científica, cooperação internacional, divulgação científica e desenvolvimento de capacidades, e a troca plena e aberta de informações científicas relevantes para as mudanças globais para alcançar a visão de umas Américas sustentáveis."
• The IAI focuses on transdisciplinary research by forming teams of natural and social scientists, decision-makers, the private sector, and civil society to co-create solutions for global change. Examples of its small grants program include climate change adaptation for artisanal fishing, early detection platforms and education for Amazon wildfires, water crisis anticipatory governance, and indigenous and local knowledge systems in ecosystem services governance.
• The IAI is implementing a program on the health, climate, and environment nexus in the Americas. This involves forming transdisciplinary research teams to address urgent issues in Latin America and the Caribbean, with focus areas including a South American data portal for the nexus, energy-efficient building cooling to reduce heat exposure, sustainable food production by women, and multidimensional vulnerability to dengue due to climate change.
• In partnership with the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the IAI is developing a global funding call titled "A Amazônia e as florestas tropicais: suas implicações globais e as ações urgentes necessárias". This call operates through the Belmont Forum, a global consortium of scientific funding agencies for which the IAI hosts the secretariat.
• The Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) fellows program, part of the IAI's Center for Scientific Diplomacy, provides capacity development for early-career researchers from government and private sector institutions. Since 2020, 47 fellows from 11 countries have participated in the program to gain experience in the science-policy interface.
