• Climate change is a primary driver of migration in the Americas, with projections suggesting 17 million people in Latin America could migrate due to climate factors by 2050. Between 1998 and 2020, over 277 million people in the region were directly affected by climatic and geophysical phenomena.
• The Amazon rainforest is trapped in a vicious cycle where deforestation and fire accelerate climate change, making the region drier and more susceptible to further fires. Between 1985 and 2020, approximately 16% of the biome was burned, with an average of 65,000 km² burned annually in the Brazilian Amazon.
• In the Paraná River basin, hydroelectric dam operations conflict with aquatic biodiversity and local fisheries. Research suggests that optimizing dam flow patterns can reconcile national energy needs with the requirements of fish populations and local tourism.
• The emergence of zoonotic diseases is linked to the Anthropocene, where habitat destruction and rising temperatures facilitate viral exchange between species. This is evidenced by the spread of dengue to previously cold areas, such as the tropical Andes and cities like Córdoba, Argentina.
