Informe de la 55a reunión del Consejo Ejecutivo del IAI

The report details the proceedings of the 55th meeting of the Executive Council (EC-55) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held on June 20, 2023, in Panama City and via videoconference. The meeting focused on financial sustainability, leadership transitions, and regional climate initiatives.

• The Executive Council recommended that the Conference of the Parties (CoP) approve the operating budget and country contributions for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, as well as the preliminary request for 2024-2025. It was noted that the operating budget has not increased since 1992 and most party contributions have remained stagnant since the Agreement entered into force in 1992.
• The Executive Council recommended the establishment of a working group to create a plan to increase annual voluntary contributions to the IAI operating budget over the next 1-3 years. This plan is also intended to define other types of contributions, such as secondments, and other financial or in-kind contributions for IAI program budgets, including science, capacity development, and other projects.
• The IAI announced leadership changes, including the appointment of Dr. Anna Stewart-Ibarra as the new Executive Director and Dr. Edwin Castellanos, a scientist from Guatemala, as the new Director of Science, effective July 17, 2023.
• The IAI is implementing an initiative to establish partnerships in the Americas to improve the ability of countries to conduct national climate assessments. These assessments are intended to support the creation of national adaptation and mitigation strategies. The initiative was scheduled to be presented at a hybrid side event during AmeriGEO Week 2023 in San José, Costa Rica, from August 14 to 19, 2023.
• A Regional Assessment of the priorities of IAI Parties regarding global change policy decisions was presented. Findings indicated that groups of countries share priorities in areas such as water, biodiversity, and climate. To address insufficient intersectoral collaboration, the Council suggested developing systems-based approaches for scientific initiatives.
