Report of the 53rd meeting of the IAI Executive Council

The report details the proceedings of the 53rd meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Executive Council, held on 14 June 2022 in Montevideo and via videoconference. The meeting focused on financial approvals, the recruitment of a new Executive Director, and progress on climate assessment initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean.

• The Executive Council recommended that the Conference of the Parties approve the Core Budget and Country Contributions for the 2022-2023 fiscal year and the preliminary request for 2023-2025. While no increases were requested for these periods due to the "social and economic environment faced by many countries due to the Covid-19 pandemic", the IAI noted that this is not sustainable long-term as the dollar value of contributions has "lost 50% of its purchasing power" since the Agreement came into force in 1992.
• The Executive Council approved a recommendation for the Conference of the Parties to initiate the recruitment process for a new Executive Director. This action is required because the current Executive Director's second mandate ends on 31 May 2023, and the Agreement allows for only a "single additional term".
• The IAI is implementing an initiative to improve the capacity of countries in the Americas to perform national climate assessments, which are intended to "support the development of national adaptation and mitigation strategies". This initiative focuses on "Training and capacity building in Latin America and the Caribbean".
• The Executive Council conducted a performance evaluation of the IAI Executive Director for the 2021-2022 intersessional period, concluding that the Director had "consistently exceeded performance expectations".
