Report of the 52nd meeting of the IAI Executive Council

The report details the 52nd meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Executive Council, held via videoconference on 18 November 2021. The meeting focused on implementing decisions from the 29th Conference of the Parties (CoP-29), reviewing the core budget and endowment fund, and updating the Council on science and capacity-building initiatives, including a new drought information system for southern South America.

• The Executive Council discussed the implementation of several CoP-29 Decisions, including Decision XXIX/8 regarding Gender Policy, Decision XXIX/15 on the inclusion of underrepresented groups, and Decision XXIX/16, which involves mapping the global change policy and decision-making landscape through a regional assessment.
• A new Initiative for Enhancing Capacity for Climate Risk Assessment and Catalyzing Partnerships to Inform Decisions in Latin America and the Caribbean is being developed. Supported by US agencies coordinated by the USGCRP and Latin American and Caribbean countries in AmeriGEO, the initiative aims to strengthen climate risk assessments to help communities mitigate and adapt to climate change.
• The IAI is establishing an endowment fund with a target of USD 1 million by the end of the Executive Director's second three-year term; as of the report date, approximately USD 300,000 has been allocated.
• The IAI Directorate is collaborating with the US Global Change Research Program on the Belmont Forum’s second Collaborative Action Network (CRA) on Climate, Environment and Health (CEH2), with an expert steering committee including members from PAHO, NOAA, Wellcome Trust, and various IAI Parties.
• The IAI received a grant from the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) in September 2021 to support work on science diplomacy and transdisciplinary science over a four-year period.
• The Science, Technology, Policy (STeP) Fellowship Program is expanding in its second year, with the number of participants expected to more than double and the inclusion of new countries such as Brazil and Panama.
• The SISSA project, an information system on droughts for southern South America targeting Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay, was officially initiated on 6 November 2021. It is funded by approximately 1.5 million Euros from the European Union's EUROCLIMA+ program and the Spanish Development Cooperation Agency (AECID).
