Informe del la 52ª reunión del Consejo Ejecutivo del IAI

This report documents the 52nd meeting of the Executive Council (EC-52) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held via videoconference on November 18, 2021. The meeting focused on implementing decisions from the 29th Conference of the Parties (CoP-29), reviewing the operational budget, and updating the Council on scientific projects and capacity-building initiatives across the Americas.

• The IAI is implementing several decisions from CoP-29, including policies on gender in scientific projects (Decision XXIX/8), increasing the inclusion of underrepresented groups (Decision XXIX/15), and conducting a regional assessment to map the landscape of global change policy and decision-making (Decision XXIX/16).
• An initiative to improve climate risk assessment capacity and catalyze partnerships for decision-making in Latin America and the Caribbean is being developed. Supported by US agencies coordinated by the US Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) and countries in AmeriGEO, the initiative aims to help communities mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts.
• The IAI has established an endowment fund with a target of 1 million US dollars by the end of the Executive Director's second three-year term; as of the report date, approximately 300,000 dollars had been allocated to the fund.
• The IAI is collaborating with the US Global Change Research Program on the second Collaborative Action Network (CRA) regarding Climate, Environment, and Health (CEH2) through the Belmont Forum. A steering committee includes participants from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), NOAA, Wellcome Trust, Uruguay, and members from Ecuador, the United States, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
• The Science, Technology, and Policy (STeP) Fellowship Program is expanding its participation for 2021-2022 to include new countries such as Brazil, Panama, and various Caribbean nations. The program is supported by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Mitacs, and NOAA.
• The SISSA project, focused on the design and implementation of a drought information system (monitoring, prediction, adaptation, and mitigation) for the south of South America, was officially launched on November 6, 2021. It targets Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay, with funding of approximately 1.5 million euros from the EU's EUROCLIMA+ program and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).
• The IAI received a grant from the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in September 2021 to support work in transdisciplinary science and science diplomacy over the next four years.
