Centro de Diplomacia Científica: una iniciativa regional para fomentar el diálogo y la colaboración entre la ciencia y la política para una América pacífica, próspera y sostenible

The Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) is a regional initiative established by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) to foster collaboration between scientists and policymakers across the Americas. Its primary goal is to provide government officials and experts with robust scientific information to address complex, transboundary challenges related to global change, including climate change, biodiversity, and water resources. The SDC aims to act as a regional resource for capacity building, research, and the exchange of best practices in science diplomacy. Its strategic objectives include developing a science diplomacy knowledge center, creating training curricula for policymakers and diplomats, and convening diverse stakeholders to promote evidence-based decision-making and international cooperation.

• The SDC is established to address a persistent need for improved communication and collaboration between scientific communities and policymakers in the Americas, ensuring that decision-makers have timely and robust scientific data to handle transboundary global change challenges.
• The SDC's mission is to enhance the ability of IAI member states to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the IAI Strategic Plan by strengthening the science-policy interface and establishing a dedicated knowledge center for science diplomacy.
• The center has outlined seven strategic objectives, which include building multinational capacities, developing a knowledge hub, convening stakeholders from government, science, and civil society, and promoting open, fair, and equitable science.
• Proposed priority activities for 2023-2028 include the creation of training courses on science diplomacy and multilateral negotiation practices, the development of an open-access database of resources, and the launch of a multilingual curriculum (English, Spanish, and Portuguese).
