Centro de Diplomacia Científica: una iniciativa regional para fomentar el diálogo y la colaboración entre la ciencia y la política para una América pacífica, próspera y sostenible

The Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) is a regional initiative launched by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) to strengthen the interface between science and policy in the Americas. The center aims to provide government officials and experts with the tools and knowledge necessary to address complex, transboundary global change challenges, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, through multinational collaboration and evidence-based decision-making.

• The Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) was established as a regional initiative to foster a supportive environment for government officials, experts, and advisors to enhance multilateral science-policy processes and collaborations in the Americas. It focuses on addressing shared global change challenges, including climate change, biodiversity, ecosystem services, oceans, and water resources.
• The SDC has defined seven primary objectives to improve the capacity of IAI member states to meet Sustainable Development Goals and the IAI Strategic Plan. These objectives include building science-policy capacities through multinational collaboration, developing a science diplomacy knowledge center, convening diverse stakeholders (including scientists, businesses, and civil society), promoting evidence-based decision-making, facilitating regional dialogue on global change, enhancing strategic communication, and promoting fair and equitable open science.
• The SDC has proposed several priority activities categorized by objective. For capacity building (Objective 1), it plans a training course on 'Introduction to Science Diplomacy' (2023-2026) and a course on multilateral negotiation best practices (2025-2028). For the knowledge center (Objective 2), activities include creating an open-access database, a brochure of 15-25 case studies from member countries, a trilingual (English, Spanish, Portuguese) asynchronous and virtual curriculum, and a guide for expanding science diplomacy to cities and nations.
• To increase scientific and political awareness, the SDC organizes webinars, conferences, and workshops. Specific events mentioned include the Climate, Environment and Health (CEH) Workshop in Argentina (March 2023), the Sustainability Research and Innovation (SRI) Congress in Panama (June 2023), and a side event at the Global Research Council (GRC) Americas (November 2023).
