DECLARACION DE PANAMA

The Panama Declaration is a statement issued following the Eighth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held on July 19 and 20 in Panama City. The document reaffirms the IAI's role as a leading intergovernmental organization for coordinating regional research on global change, emphasizing the importance of scientific merit, peer review, and international cooperation to support mitigation and adaptation strategies in the Americas.

• The IAI is established as the primary regional mechanism for broad cooperation in the scientific and educational aspects of global change, focusing on reducing vulnerability and increasing recovery capacity through regional assessment, mitigation, and adaptation strategies.
• The IAI promotes interdisciplinary regional cooperation across Earth, sea, atmospheric, and environmental sciences, as well as social sciences, with a specific focus on biological diversity, ecosystem effects, socioeconomic impacts, and mitigation and adaptation technologies.
• The IAI focuses its efforts on regional scientific themes and projects that cannot be executed by a single state or institution, utilizing a peer-review system based on scientific merit for project selection and evaluation.
• The IAI enhances the technical and scientific capacities of regional states through grants, scholarship programs, and capacity-building activities.
• The Conference of the Parties renewed its commitment to voluntary contributions to the IAI's operating budget and urged non-signatory states in the Americas to join the Agreement.
