DECLARAÇÃO DO PANAMÁ

The Panama Declaration is a statement issued following the Eighth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held on July 19 and 20 in Panama City. The document reaffirms the IAI's role as a leading intergovernmental organization for coordinating regional research on global change and emphasizes the importance of scientific merit, international cooperation, and financial contributions from member states.

• The Conference of the Parties reaffirmed the IAI as the primary regional mechanism for broad cooperation on the scientific and educational aspects of global change, positioning it as the leading intergovernmental organization for coordinating research that informs regional strategies for assessment, mitigation, and adaptation to reduce vulnerability.
• The IAI focuses on promoting regional cooperation for interdisciplinary research across Earth, sea, atmospheric, and environmental sciences, as well as social sciences. Particular emphasis is placed on the effects of global change on biological diversity and ecosystems, as well as the socio-economic impacts and technologies used for mitigation and adaptation.
• The IAI supports regional research projects that are too large for a single state or institution to conduct individually, selecting projects based on scientific merit through a peer-review system.
• The Conference noted that the IAI enhances the scientific and technical capacities of regional states through grants, scholarship programs, and capacity-building activities.
• The Conference reaffirmed its commitment to voluntary contributions for the IAI's operational budget and called upon countries to increase their financial contributions to support the development of IAI programs.
