DECLARATION OF PANAMA

The Declaration of Panama is a statement issued following the Eighth Meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Conference of the Parties, held on July 19th and 20th in Panama City. The document reaffirms the IAI's role as a leading intergovernmental organization for coordinating regional research on global change, emphasizing the need for scientific merit, interdisciplinary cooperation, and continued financial support from Member States.

• The IAI develops regional networks of research agencies to increase international scientific and socio-economic research regarding the causes, reach, and consequences of global change in America, aiming to bridge the gap between science and decision-making.
• The IAI promotes interdisciplinary research across Earth, sea, atmosphere, and environmental sciences, as well as social sciences, with a specific focus on biological diversity, ecosystems, and the economic and technological aspects of mitigation and adaptation.
• The IAI serves as a regional mechanism for scientific and educational cooperation, focusing on projects of regional importance that individual states cannot perform alone, and utilizes peer review and merit-based selection for its projects.
• The Conference identified the necessity of regular operational budget contributions and voluntary contributions for the IAI's success, requesting that countries increase their resource and fund contributions for program development.
