Draft 37th Meeting of the IAI Executive Council Action list

This action list documents the decisions made during the 37th Meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Executive Council (EC) held on 12 August 2014 in Mexico City. The meeting focused on the establishment of the Science-Policy Committee (SPAC), the renewal of administrative committees, budget approvals, and the nomination of members for the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC).

• The Executive Council (EC) established a committee comprising Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, Paraguay, and the US to recommend 6 candidates from a list of 24 for the Science-Policy Committee (SPAC). While the SPAC is intended to have 9 members (split equally between the Directorate, the CoP, and the SPAC itself), the initial 6 positions will be nominated by the CoP for a one-year term to allow other member countries time to participate in future nominations.
• The Directorate nominated three members for the SPAC with three-year terms: Luis Basterra of the National Congress of Argentina, Yolanda Kakabadse of WWF, and Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz of FAPESP in São Paulo, Brazil.
• The EC approved the Core Budget request for 2014-2015 and proposed changes to Country Contributions for the same period, both of which were forwarded to the CoP for final approval. Additionally, the EC accepted the Financial Report and Financial Statements for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014.
• Regarding the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), the EC accepted recommendations for the reelection of José Antonio Marengo Orsini and Rodolfo Dirzo, the election of Trevor Platt and Carlos Joly, and a two-year term extension for Frank E. Müller Karger to ensure continuity.
• The EC urged IAI member countries to expand the representation of interest groups beyond their own institutions, citing the Uruguay National IAI Committee as a model.
