2024-2025 Work Plan of the Open Data and Science Committee

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) has outlined a 2024-2025 work plan for its Open Data and Science Committee. The plan focuses on updating the IAI's Open Data Policy, improving the accessibility of its data repositories for researchers and decision-makers, and supporting international evaluation processes, including those led by the United Nations and the IPCC.

• The IAI aims to implement and update its Open Data Policy through a participatory process involving staff, advisory board members, and representatives of IAI Parties and partners. This includes developing training materials and manuals for open data generation to ensure that projects funded by the IAI, including those via the Belmont Forum, comply with requirements to share research data and scientific publications.
• The IAI is working to improve its data platforms to better serve different user profiles: researchers who require research data and scientific publications, and decision-makers who need higher-level synthesis, such as policy briefs. Specific actions include redesigning the repository and search engine for scientific publications—which contains over 600 articles and reports from 1997 to 2024—and evaluating the creation of a new repository specifically for policy summaries and synthetic evaluations.
• The IAI is reviewing its use of the Harvard Dataverse, where IAI-funded projects deposited 23 research databases between 2019 and 2022 across four themes: Ecosystems, Biodiversity, and Land Use; Climate Variability in the Americas; Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Inland Water Processes; and Human Dimensions and Applications. Due to low download numbers, the IAI will evaluate if this is the most appropriate repository.
• The IAI is providing technical and informational support to several international initiatives: producing synthesis documents for United Nations Common Country Analyses for Argentina, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, and Uruguay; compiling literature for the IPCC's assessment on climate change and cities; assisting the Belmont Forum in defining the scope of a Collaborative Research Action on Oceans, Coasts and Islands; and supporting a LACI pilot on Data Management for Climate Risk Assessment in the La Plata Basin.
