• The IAI launched a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Climate Change Impacts in Latin America on November 7, 2016, during COP-22 in Marrakech. As of May 24, the course had 6,524 enrolled participants and featured contributions from 21 scientists, including former Executive Secretaries of the CBD and UNFCCC.
• The IAI's Science-Policy Liaison Office (DEC&P) in Buenos Aires analyzed the impact of IAI science, finding that the United States, Canada, and Argentina are the largest producers of publications. The analysis showed a high level of reciprocity between research projects and stakeholders, with government institutions accounting for nearly three-quarters of the relationships.
• The IAI has expanded its capacity-building through Professional Development Seminars (PDS) between 2016 and 2019, creating ten interdisciplinary networks with 48 professionals from 42 institutions in 16 countries. One PDS focused on tropical forest ecosystem services (July 2016 in Costa Rica and May 2017 in Chile), while another focused on science-policy integration for sustainability (November 2016 in Dominican Republic and October 2017 in Canada).
• The IAI is pursuing multilateral funding mechanisms through the Inter-American Forum for Cooperation in Global Change Research, aiming to link national funding agencies. A new small grants proposal approved by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in March 2017 focuses on adaptation and ecosystem services.
• The IAI participated in several high-level international forums, including COP-22 in Marrakech, COP-13 of the CBD in Cancun, and SBSTA sessions in Bonn. At COP-13, the IAI recommended four priority areas for research: monitoring biodiversity's effect on human wellbeing, recognizing biodiversity value trade-offs, ensuring policy coherence across productive sectors, and co-generating knowledge through stakeholder-scientist partnerships.
• The IAI is establishing a network of young scientists, including the creation of the IAI Graduate and Postdoctoral Students Association (GSP), with an initial meeting held in August 2016 in Bahía Blanca, Argentina.
