IAI Directorate Report to the Twenty Fifth Conference of the Parties

The IAI Directorate Report covers the period from July 2016 to May 2017, focusing on the implementation of transdisciplinary research and capacity building across the Americas. Key activities include the management of the Third Collaborative Research Network (CRN3), the development of Professional Development Seminars (PDS), and the establishment of a Science-Policy Liaison Directorate (SPLD) to bridge the gap between scientific findings and governmental decision-making. It includes ten major networks funded between US$ 700,000 and US$ 1,000,000 and seven smaller 'Science Integration' projects funded between US$ 98,000 and US$ 180,000.
• The Science-Policy Liaison Directorate (SPLD) in Buenos Aires has implemented an impact analysis program showing that the US, Canada, and Argentina produce the most publications, while researchers in these countries, followed by Brazil, collaborate with most other countries in the Americas.
• The IAI launched a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the Impacts of Climate Change in Latin America at COP-22 in Marrakech, Morocco. As of May 24, 2017, the course had 6,524 registered participants.
• The IAI has expanded its capacity building through Professional Development Seminars (PDS), establishing ten interdisciplinary networks with 48 professionals from 42 institutions in 16 countries. One PDS focused on managing ecosystem services from tropical forests, resulting in projects on carbon sequestration in Costa Rica and mangrove impacts in Peru and Ecuador.
• The IAI has actively engaged with global conventions, including participating in the UNFCCC COP-22 in Morocco, the CBD COP-13 in Mexico, and SBSTA sessions in Germany. At COP-13, the IAI provided recommendations on mainstreaming biodiversity in sectors such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries, health, and tourism.
