LETTER OF AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE INTER-AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL CHANGE RESEARCH (IAI) AND THE BRAZILIAN PLATFORM ON BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES (BPBES)

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and the Brazilian Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BPBES) have entered into a two-year Letter of Agreement to collaborate on global environmental change policies. The primary initiative is the integration of the BPBES Voluntary Young Researcher Program (VYRP) with the IAI Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) Fellowship program. Under this arrangement, BPBES will support up to four fellows every 12 months for two years, while IAI provides professional development training in leadership, communication, and science diplomacy for early-career researchers in Latin America and the Caribbean.

• The agreement creates a collaboration between the IAI and BPBES focusing on the interface between science and global environmental change policies, specifically addressing climate change and natural resource management.
• The central collaborative activity is the conjunction of the BPBES Voluntary Young Researcher Program (VYRP) and the IAI Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) Fellowship program, where VYRP fellows will participate as BPBES STeP fellows.
• BPBES is responsible for supporting up to four fellows every 12 months for a period of two years, coordinating their placement in host institutions, and financing international travel when resources are available.
• The IAI will provide fellows with a professional development program focusing on three pillar areas: Leadership, Communication, and Science Diplomacy, intended for scientists and policy makers in Latin America and the Caribbean.
• The agreement is effective for two years, covering two fellowship periods of one year each, and may be renewed by common agreement.
