This Letter of Agreement establishes a flexible framework for collaboration between the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and the Brazilian Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BPBES). The primary focus of the agreement is to create synergies between the BPBES Voluntary Young Researcher Program (VYRP) and the IAI Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) Fellowship program to bridge the gap between scientific research and policy-making regarding global environmental change.

• The IAI and BPBES have agreed to a specific collaborative activity that integrates the BPBES Voluntary Young Researcher Program (VYRP) with the IAI Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) Fellowship program. Under this arrangement, VYRP young research fellows will participate as BPBES STeP fellows.
• The IAI STeP program is designed to support early career researchers—specifically those within 7 years of completing a PhD or at a postdoctoral level—to provide expert scientific advice to policy makers in Latin America and the Caribbean. The program focuses on three pillar areas: Leadership, Communication, and Science Diplomacy.
• BPBES is responsible for supporting up to four fellows every 12 months for a period of 2 years. Its duties include serving as the coordinating institution for identifying and placing VYRP fellows in host institutions, appointing mentors, and financing international travel for fellows and potentially their supervisors when resources are available.
• The IAI is responsible for providing a professional development program of up to two years consisting of virtual and in-person training. Additionally, the IAI will invite fellows to 1-2 international events and establish an Inter-American network of fellows, alumni, and host institutions.
• The agreement is effective from the date of signature for a period of 2 years, covering two fellowship periods of one year each, with the possibility of renewal by common agreement.
