ACCORD RELATIF A LA CREATION D’UN INSTITUT INTERAMERICAIN DE RECHERCHES SUR LES CHANGEMENTS A L’ECHELLE DU GLOBE

The 1992 Agreement establishing the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) creates a regional network of research organizations dedicated to studying global-scale changes. • The governance structure consists of four main bodies: the Conference of Parties (the primary decision-maker), the Executive Council (the executive body), the Scientific Advisory Committee (the primary scientific advisory body), and the Administrative Directorate (the primary administrative body).
• The Institute utilizes Research Centers, which are designated based on proposals from Parties. These centers must conduct interdisciplinary research, collect and exchange data, and "créer une capacité régionale et assurer une formation avancée" in global change fields.
• Financial operations are supported by voluntary contributions from Parties. The operating budget for the Administrative Directorate and other bodies is funded by annual voluntary promises in "tranches de 5000 dollars US". Major research programs are funded by voluntary contributions from Parties, Associates, or donations from non-regional states, international organizations, and private entities.
