Report of the Fifteenth Meeting of the IAI Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC)

The report details the fifteenth meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), held in May 2001. • The SAC reviewed several Collaborative Research Network (CRN) projects, noting that while some are highly successful in science or networking, many are weak in human dimension (HD) aspects. Specific projects like CRN 003 and CRN 061 were praised for scientific results and networking, while CRN 031 was noted as being strong in HD but weak in science.
• The IAI Directorate is developing a standard report format for PIs to use in second-year reports to resolve issues with non-homogeneous data, which currently makes it difficult to extract information on publications, supported students, and data for the IAI-DIS.
• The SAC recommended a shift in the IAI Data Information System (DIS) strategy toward a simpler website-based version where each PI is responsible for their own project web page, which would then be linked from the main IAI page.
• The committee proposed a synthesis work for the ISP program, potentially as a conference in late 2002, to capture accomplishments through a book or series of books organized around the IAI science agenda.
• A proposal submitted by Osvaldo Sala on behalf of IAI to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment was declined, as the assessment decided to fund only projects in Asia and Africa, excluding Latin America.
