The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) announced the IAI Small Grant Program (IAI-SGP) in November 2001. This competitive program provides funding for small research projects, workshops, and technical reports to foster collaborative global change research among scientists and institutions in IAI member countries, specifically aiming to build the foundation for future research networks.

• The IAI Small Grant Program (IAI-SGP) was approved by the 8th IAI Conference of the Parties (CoP) in Panama City in July 2001. It is designed to support small-scale research, capacity building, and planning activities that facilitate the future development of larger Research Networks and Science Programs, while integrating scientific knowledge into decision-making for regional global environmental problems.
• The IAI Science Agenda consists of four main themes: (I) Understanding Climate Variability in the Americas, (II) Comparative Studies of Ecosystems, Biodiversity, Land Use and Water Resources in the Americas, (III) Changes in the Composition of the Atmosphere, Oceans and Fresh Waters, and (IV) Integrated Assessment, Human Dimensions and Applications.
• The IAI-SGP provides funding for three specific types of activities: 6 to 8 small research projects with grants up to 30,000 USD each (prioritizing Theme IV), 8 to 10 workshops with grants up to 10,000 USD each, and 2 to 3 technical reports with grants up to 15,000 USD each focused on reducing vulnerability and enhancing resilience in Latin America and the Caribbean.
• To be eligible, proposals must be collaborative efforts involving Principal Investigators (PIs) or Co-PIs from at least three IAI ratifying countries. As of October 2001, these countries include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
• The IAI-SGP allows for overhead charges of up to eight percent of the total proposed budget, though the institute encourages lower rates.
• Proposals for the IAI-SGP must be submitted in English or Spanish and reach the IAI Directorate by February 25, 2002. Submissions must be physical copies (12 copies required) as fax or e-mail submissions are not accepted.
