Report of the Directorate to the EC 14th EC Meeting

This report from the Directorate of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) provides an analysis of institutional, programmatic, and educational activities conducted between August 1 and October 31, 2001. • The IAI Small Grant Program (IAI-SGP) was launched in November 2001 with funding commitments of US$ 300,000 from the USGCRP (NSF) and US$ 43,000 from NOAA/OGP.
• The IAI/UM Summer Institute, a collaboration with the University of Miami, has run for three years focusing on interdisciplinary global change science. Participation has grown to 22 participants in the third year from 91 applications, with a noted increase in the professional qualifications of applicants over time.
• Between 1995 and October 31, 2001, IAI awards supported the training of numerous students: 92 through the Initial Science Program, 123 through the Collaborative Research Network Program, 275 through the IAI/UNDP/GEF/WMO Project, and 62 through the IAI/University of Miami Summer Institute.
• The Program to Expand Scientific Capacity in the Americas (PESCA) included 11 projects. As of November 1, 2001, one project regarding ENSO effects on sugar cane yields was reported as 'not done' due to money transfer problems.
