IAI Science Grant Program – Phase II General Guidelines

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) issued general guidelines for Phase II of its Science Grant Program (SGP-II). This open-call program provides one-time awards of up to US$ 30,000 to support research networks and activities across the Americas that address regional global change issues, with a specific priority on the human dimensions and policy applications of the IAI Science Agenda.

• The Science Grant Program – Phase II (SGP-II) provides one-time awards limited to US$ 30,000 for periods of up to one year, with a specific limit of US$ 10,000 for meetings. Between 15 and 20 awards are expected to be granted.
• The IAI Science Agenda is organized into four themes: (I) Understanding Climate Variability in the Americas, (II) Comparative Studies of Ecosystems, Biodiversity, Land Use and Water Resources in the Americas, (III) Changes in the Composition of the Atmosphere, Oceans and Fresh Waters, and (IV) Integrated Assessment, Human Dimensions and Applications.
• Priority for SGP-II funding is given to applications within Theme IV (Integrated Assessment, Human Dimensions and Applications), particularly those that have not been previously funded by IAI grants and those involving young scientists from the Americas.
• To be eligible, proposals must be collaborative efforts involving Principal Investigators or Co-Principal Investigators from institutions in at least three IAI ratifying countries. As of May 2001, these countries include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
• The IAI has previously implemented three stages of network development: the Start-Up Grant Program (SG) starting in 1995 with US$ 2.0 million for 37 teams; the Initial Science Program (ISP) with approximately US$ 3.8 million for 39 projects between 1995-2001; and the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) starting in 1999 with an investment of approximately US$ 11 million over five years.
