Analysis of the CARIACO station (1996–2013) reveals a significant increase in sea surface temperature, a decrease in pH, and a decline in chlorophyll a and phytoplankton abundance, alongside a reduction in upwelling intensity linked to lower wind speeds.

• Between 1996 and 2013, the sea surface temperature at the CARIACO station increased significantly by 0.9 °C.
• The study recorded a decrease in pH at a rate of 0.0024 ± 0.0003 units per year and an increase in dissolved inorganic carbon concentration of 1 ± 0.29 µmol kg-1 year-1.
• Upwelling intensity showed a decreasing trend associated with a reduction in wind speed, while chlorophyll a concentration, primary production, and phytoplankton abundance also declined significantly, leading to a shift in dominant communities and a change in water optical characteristics toward more blue rather than green tones.
