Síntesis de las tendencias de los parámetros oceanográficos y ópticos en la estación serie de tiempo CARIACO enero 1996-diciembre 2013

This research paper analyzes long-term variability and trends in oceanographic and optical parameters at the CARIACO time-series station in the Cariaco Basin, Venezuela, from January 1996 to December 2013.

• Between 1996 and 2013, the CARIACO station experienced a significant increase in sea surface temperature of 0.9 °C over the 18-year study period. Additionally, upwelling intensity showed a decreasing trend linked to a reduction in wind speed.
• The study recorded a decrease in pH at a rate of 0.0024 ± 0.0003 units per year, while the concentration of dissolved inorganic carbon increased by 1 ± 0.29 µmol kg-1 year-1.
• There was a significant decline in chlorophyll a concentration, primary production, and phytoplankton abundance, alongside a shift in dominant communities. These biological changes altered the optical properties of the seawater, resulting in a higher frequency of blue-toned waters compared to green-toned waters in the later years of the time series.
