Translating fire impacts in southwestern Amazonia into economic costs

This research paper analyzes the spatiotemporal variability of fire dynamics and the resulting environmental, social, and economic costs in Acre, Brazil, between 2008 and 2012, with a specific focus on the extreme drought of 2010.

• In the state of Acre, forest fires in 2010—an extremely dry year—affected a total area approximately 16 times larger than in meteorologically normal years, with fires spreading beyond cities and roads into remote protected private and sustainable-use conservation areas.
• The estimated economic losses due to fires in Acre between 2008 and 2012 totaled US$ 307.46 ± 85.41 million, representing 9.07 ± 2.46% of the state's GDP. The losses for the year 2010 alone were approximately US$ 243.36 ± 85.05 million, which accounted for 7.03 ± 2.45% of the GDP.
