Translating fire impacts in southwestern Amazonia into economic costs

The research assesses the economic and environmental costs of forest fires in Acre, Brazil, finding that an extreme drought in 2010 caused burned areas to be 16 times larger than in normal years, resulting in economic losses of approximately US$ 243.36 million, or 7.03% of the state's GDP.

• Between 2008 and 2012, forest fires in Acre were typically concentrated near roads and major cities in polygons up to 0.6 km2, but the extreme drought of 2010 caused fires to spread into remote areas, including sustainable-use conservation areas and protected private areas.
• The total area affected by forest fires in 2010 was approximately 16 times larger than the area affected during meteorologically normal years.
• Economic losses from fires in Acre totaled US$ 307.46 ± 85.41 million for the 2008-2012 period, representing 9.07 ± 2.46% of the state's GDP. Specifically, in 2010, losses were estimated at US$ 243.36 ± 85.05 million, which accounted for 7.03 ± 2.45% of the GDP.
