Protected area types, strategies and impacts in Brazil's Amazon: public protected area strategies do not yield a consistent ranking of protected area types by impact

This research paper examines the effectiveness of different protected area (PA) types in the Brazilian Amazon, finding that public strategies do not produce a consistent ranking of PA types by impact and that strategies vary significantly across regions and time periods in response to political and deforestation pressures.

• The siting and internal deforestation of PAs vary by region and time. In the arc of deforestation, PAs are relatively far from non-forest areas, whereas in other states they are relatively near. Internal deforestation became more similar across PA types for those established after 2000.
• After 2000, the extent of PAs became less similar across different types, with very little non-indigenous area being created within the arc of deforestation.
