Assessment of climate variability and land use effect on shallow lakes in temperate plains of Argentina

This research paper assesses the relationship between climatic variability, specifically the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), land use, and the areal variations of shallow lakes in the temperate plains of Argentina between 2002 and 2011.

• Between 2002 and 2011, the maximum area of shallow lakes in the temperate plains of Argentina was more dependent on changes in the rainfall regime associated with ENSO events than on changes in land use, such as the increase or decrease of cultivated areas.
• Specific ENSO events significantly impacted precipitation across the studied lake regions, resulting in maximum lake areas in 2002 during El Niño (2002/3) and minimum areas in 2008 during La Niña (2007/8).
