Drivers of fire anomalies in the Brazilian Amazon: lessons learned from the 2019 fire crisis

An investigation into the 2019 fire crisis in the Brazilian Amazon biome identifies a strong correlation between active fire anomalies and extreme levels of deforestation, particularly in the states of Acre, Amazonas, and Roraima.

• The 2019 fire crisis in the Brazilian Amazon biome was characterized by abnormally high monthly fire counts in the states of Acre, Amazonas, and Roraima, which were also distinguished by extreme levels of deforestation that year.
• Areas in 2019 that experienced active fire occurrence significantly above the biome average showed a strong historical and current link to deforestation and fire: they had six times more deforestation in 2019, five times more deforestation in the five previous years, and three times more active fires in the three previous years.
• Analysis of data from 2003 to 2019 shows a spatial relationship between fire and deforestation, with approximately one-third of yearly active fires occurring within 1 km of deforested areas in the same year, and one-third of deforested areas located within 500 m of deforested areas from the previous year.
