Late Pleistocene-Holocene deltas in southern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina

This research paper describes the evolution of a large delta system in the southern Buenos Aires Province of Argentina from the Last Glacial Maximum to the present, focusing on the roles of the Colorado and Negro rivers.

• The current Colorado Delta is a small remnant of a much larger delta system that was active starting approximately 10,000 calibrated years BP, when mean sea level (msl) was around -30 m.
• A 430 km delta front was formed by the Colorado River and unnamed rivers in the northern and central portions, and the Negro River in the lower central and southern portions, with peak sediment and water inputs estimated at 9,000 calibrated years BP when msl was -18 m.
• Sea level fluctuations significantly altered the system: msl reached 6 m above present 6,000 calibrated years BP, causing the Colorado and Negro rivers to migrate southward, and later decreased at 4 mm/yr to -2 m during the Little Ice Age.
• Currently, only the Colorado River maintains an active delta in the central area; the Negro River has an estuary but no active delta, and the northern and southern areas have become intertidal zones known as the Bahía Blanca Estuary and Anegada Bay.
