Late Pleistocene-Holocene deltas in southern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina

The research describes the evolution of a 430 km delta front in southern Buenos Aires Province, which was most active around 9,000 calibrated years BP. While the Colorado and Negro rivers once contributed to a large delta system when sea levels were significantly lower, current conditions have left only a minor remnant delta for the Colorado River and an estuary for the Negro River.

• The current Colorado Delta is a small remnant of a much larger system that was active starting approximately 10,000 calibrated years BP, when mean sea level was around -30 m.
• A 430 km delta front was formed by the Colorado River, the Negro River, and several now-extinct rivers, with peak sediment and water inputs estimated at 9,000 calibrated years BP when mean sea level was -18 m.
• Sea level fluctuations significantly altered the system: a rise to 6 m above present 6,000 calibrated years BP caused the Colorado and Negro rivers to migrate southward, and a subsequent decrease of 4 mm/yr led to a low of -2 m during the Little Ice Age.
