Scientists, policymakers and stakeholders plan for climate change: a promising approach in Chile's Maipo basin

The research presents a hybrid water security-ecosystem services-human well-being adaptation framework developed through a collaborative science-policy dialogue in the Maipo River basin, Chile. This framework, inspired by robust decisionmaking (RDM), identifies water-related attributes to protect against climate variability and helps participants align short-term water needs with long-term development and ecosystem goals. It serves as a tool to identify performance indicators and focus dialogue on climate uncertainties, intersectoral relations, and the scale of adaptation strategies.

• The co-produced framework supports adaptation by enabling participants to identify development and ecosystem-services goals beyond immediate water needs and helps determine performance indicators for evaluating adaptation strategies.
• The framework focuses the planning dialogue on three critical areas: uncertainties in climate and development scenarios, intersectoral and upstream-downstream relations, and the specific scale and location for implementing adaptation strategies.
