GreenLatinos Community Statement on the Biden Administration’s Conservation in Action Announcements: Castner Range National Monument, Avi Kwa Ame National Monument Designations and the Ocean

GreenLatinos and partner organizations applaud the creation of the Castner Range and Avi Kwa Ame National Monuments and the introduction of the Ocean Climate Action Plan. The group highlights the benefits of these actions for public health, economic opportunity, and the protection of Indigenous sacred sites and biodiversity, particularly for Hispanic, Latino, and frontline communities in Texas and Nevada.

• The designation of the Castner Range National Monument is described as the most significant conservation advancement for the wellness of Hispanic and Latino/a/e people in the U.S., as the surrounding low-income residents previously lacked access to natural open spaces. The monument is expected to improve mental, heart, and lung health, reduce chronic illness, and create jobs in sectors such as recreation, natural resource management, and public land administration.
• The Avi Kwa Ame National Monument protects heritage sites, petroglyphs, and threatened wildlife, safeguarding them from industrial land conversion. For residents of Las Vegas, Nevada, the monument represents an opportunity to address inequitable access to nature and provide environmental education for those facing deadly heat waves.
• The Ocean Climate Action Plan is recognized as a first-of-its-kind initiative providing necessary tools and solutions to address the climate crisis and maintain ocean health.
• These conservation efforts align with a commitment to protect at least 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030. In Nevada, the recreation industry—which the Avi Kwa Ame monument supports—is a key growth sector that generates $12.6 billion in annual consumer spending and has created 87,000 jobs.
