Stuffing for Bears who Care

This case study describes a resource synergy facilitated by the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) between Advanced Technical Sock Industries (ATSI), The Care Bear Project, and The Courier Guy to repurpose industrial waste as stuffing for teddy bears.

• The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) facilitated a partnership to divert yarn fluff waste from Advanced Technical Sock Industries (ATSI) to The Care Bear Project for use as teddy bear stuffing. As of February 2020, approximately 225kg of fluff waste had been transferred.
• The synergy resulted in significant economic benefits for both primary parties: The Care Bear Project saved R10,800 annually on stuffing costs, which enabled the employment of two additional staff members, while ATSI reduced its waste disposal costs, having previously paid R556 per tonne for general waste disposal.
• The Courier Guy resolved the logistical challenge of transporting materials from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg by becoming a CSI partner and providing free transport of the yarn fluff twice a month.
• The environmental impact of the project includes the annual diversion of 0.18 tonnes of waste from landfill and a reduction in fossil GHG CO2e emissions of 4.187 tonnes for ATSI.
