While currently classified as type 310 hazardous waste, it could be reused in constructing roadways, parking lots, and concrete production, especially for new infrastructure within the Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
- Atlantis has significant waste-to-energy potential from woody biomass (at least 1,650 tpa) and other organics (approximately 8,000 tpa). Proposed investments include sorting plants for direct use in kilns, wood-derived fuel plants, charcoal plants, and pyrolysis plants. A pyrolysis plant combining biomass with plastic and textile waste (totaling 8,880 tpa) could produce 4,160,000 litres of fuel oil and 2,800 tonnes of biochar, with Capex exceeding R60,000,000.
- Atlantis consumes the largest amount of municipal water among Cape Town's industrial areas. The report suggests a 'cascading water use' network based on pinch analysis, where water is passed from high-quality requirements to lower-quality applications to reduce municipal consumption.
