Intervention Brief

The area lacks formal electricity and has limited communal water points, with an unemployment rate near 65% and over 50% of children aged 0-18 not attending school.
• Residents of Freedom Farm currently rely on paraffin, wood, and gas for heating and cooking, and use candles, paraffin, and informal electricity for lighting. The most common appliances used are TVs, kettles, and cellphone chargers.
• Through co-design sessions, the Freedom Farm community leadership prioritized three main needs: household-level safe cooking (currently gas-dominated), connectivity for internet, radio, and television, and home-level electricity for internal lighting. Residents expressed a willingness to pay up to R100 per month for safe, reliable, and affordable services, with the goal of owning the system after the contract ends.
