Live to Pump Again

This case study describes a circular economy initiative facilitated by the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) involving Siyavana Solutions and the Shell Petroleum Company to upcycle decommissioned fuel pumps in South Africa.

• WISP facilitated a partnership between Siyavana Solutions and the Shell Petroleum Company to divert 16 tonnes of waste from landfills, including 10 tons of pumps, 5 tons of hoses, and 1 ton of computer boards.
• The upcycling process involves Siyavana Solutions collecting old petrol pumps from Shell-owned stations, refurbishing them, and reselling them back to Shell at a discount. Over a four-year period, 429 fuel pumps were collected.
• The initiative generated economic benefits, including R4 million in annual additional revenue from the sale of remanufactured pumps and a 30% cost saving per pump for Shell.
• The project created 9 permanent jobs shared between Siyavana Solutions and farmers.
