Ashes to Brick

The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) facilitated a one-off exchange where Apollo Brick accepted 55 tonnes of charred wood and ash from Pallet Cycle following a fire. The ash was incorporated into bricks, and the charred wood was used as kiln fuel, resulting in a saving of 16 tonnes of CO2e and R24,750 in disposal costs for Pallet Cycle.

• WISP facilitated the diversion of 55 tonnes of waste from landfill by arranging for Apollo Brick to take charred wood and ash from Pallet Cycle after a storage facility fire.
• The diverted materials were repurposed by Apollo Brick: ash was used as a traditional brick component, and partially burnt wood served as fuel in the kiln due to its energy content.
• The exchange generated environmental benefits, including a reduction in the use of virgin materials and a total saving of 16 tonnes of fossil greenhouse gases (CO2e).
• The project provided economic advantages, specifically an annual saving of R24,750 for Pallet Cycle by avoiding disposal and transport costs, while Apollo Brick obtained cheaper fuel and feed material.
