Ashes to Brick

This case study describes a resource recovery project facilitated by the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) between Pallet Cycle and Apollo Brick. Following a fire at Pallet Cycle's storage facility, WISP arranged for Apollo Brick to repurpose the resulting waste material, diverting it from landfills and providing economic and environmental benefits to both companies.

• WISP facilitated a one-off exchange that diverted 55 tonnes of waste from landfills after a fire destroyed Pallet Cycle's storage facility, leaving behind ash and charred wood.
• Apollo Brick repurposed the waste material by incorporating the ash into its brick production and using the partially burnt wood as fuel for its kiln due to its energy content.
• The project resulted in economic savings of R24,750 for Pallet Cycle by avoiding transport and disposal costs, while Apollo Brick benefited from cheaper fuel and feed material.
• Environmental benefits of the exchange included the diversion of 55 tonnes of waste from landfill, a reduction in the use of virgin materials, and a saving of 16 tonnes of fossil greenhouse gases (CO2e).
