Impact case study: Sustainable local development in Nomzamo Agri Village, Ermelo, Mpumalanga

The Nomzamo Agri Village initiative implemented a decentralized solar energy model that provided electricity to 91% of households, leading to significant financial savings, improved safety through 60 solar streetlights, and the creation of 78 temporary jobs. This energy foundation enabled further interventions in communal refrigeration for small businesses, waterless and greywater sanitation pilots, and a transition from subsistence to commercial farming, with the first cabbage harvest sold to a supermarket in late 2024. The project, supported by GreenCape's Alternative Service Delivery Unit and international partners, generated over R350,000 in local earnings for enumerators and solar technicians.

• The deployment of Peco Power household solar systems achieved a 91% electrification rate among the 446 households in Nomzamo Agri Village, with 408 households voluntarily subscribing. A January 2025 survey of 288 households indicated that 94.8% experienced significant cost reductions, 71.7% saw improved indoor air quality, and 66.9% reported better learning environments for children.
• Public safety and economic activity improved following the installation of 60 solar-powered streetlights, each producing 2000 lumens. Consequently, 80% of respondents reported feeling safer and 78% noted an increase in night-time economic opportunities.
• Energy security enabled the rollout of productive energy uses, including customized solar solutions for a crèche, a kota shop, a spaza shop, and a seamstress, as well as a communal refrigeration project consisting of 10 units (each with a 500L chest freezer and solar PowerBricks) to improve food security and reduce waste.
• The project expanded into sanitation and agriculture, piloting the Enviro Loo waterless system and Envirosan’s Eaziflush™ greywater system. In agriculture, training helped farmers move toward commercial production, resulting in a cabbage harvest in late 2024 sold to a supermarket chain in Ermelo.
• The initiative generated over R350,000 in total earnings for the community. This includes 78 temporary jobs for enumerators (42 in Phase 1 and 30 in Phase 2) and permanent roles for solar PV installers and 'Peco Champions' who earn commissions per installation and paying subscriber.
