Zille gives WISP a mention in green economy speech

The Western Cape government reports significant investment in its green economy, including R20bn allocated to the renewable energy sector in 2013 and specific industrial projects like wind turbine tower manufacturing and solar panel production. Key initiatives include the Green Economy Strategic Framework, the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP), and the establishment of a cleantech Special Economic Zone in Atlantis.

• Investment mapping in 2013 estimated that R20bn was allocated to actual and planned investment within the Western Cape's renewable energy sector.
• Specific foreign direct investments include a R220m project by the Spanish company Gestamp to manufacture wind turbine towers in the Atlantis Green Manufacturing Hub, creating 200 permanent jobs, and a decision by Chinese-based Jinko Solar to establish a solar panels plant in Cape Town.
• The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) facilitates business opportunities by connecting companies to use unused or residual resources, resulting in carbon savings, investment, and jobs within six months.
• The province's green economy strategy identifies natural gas as a new and important power source and includes the proposed establishment of a cleantech Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Atlantis.
• The government is implementing social-focused initiatives, including the 110% Green programme with over 120 flagship projects and the Better Living Challenge to provide home improvement solutions for poorer communities, featuring a show village in Philippi in October.
