STATEMENT BY CITY’S EXECUTIVE MAYOR, PATRICIA DE LILLE

The City of Cape Town is issuing a Green Bond of up to R1 billion, accredited by the Climate Bonds Initiative’s Standard, to fund a variety of climate action projects. These projects include the procurement of electric buses, building energy efficiency, water management, sewerage effluent treatment, and coastal protection. The City intends to raise the bond in July 2017, requiring updates to its Domestic Medium Term Note (DMTN) programme to comply with JSE Debt Listing Requirements and the Municipal Finance Management Act.

• The City of Cape Town is issuing a bond with a value of up to R1 billion, which will be accredited through the Climate Bonds Initiative’s Standard to be marketed as a "true Green Bond".
• The proceeds of the Green Bond will fund a mix of mitigation and adaptation projects aligned with the City’s Climate Change Strategy, specifically: electric bus procurement, building energy efficiency, coastal structure rehabilitation and protection, sewerage effluent treatment, and water management (including reservoir upgrades, water pressure management, and meter installations/replacements).
• The City plans to raise the Green Bond in July 2017. To do so, it must update its May 30, 2008, Domestic Medium Term Note (DMTN) programme memorandum to meet JSE Debt Listing Requirements and comply with section 46 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).
