Advancing Women's Rights to Strengthen Shea Enterprises

The 'Enhancing Women’s Land Tenure through Shea Tree Mapping' project uses geo-tagging to record shea trees and link them to women producers in Ghana, Togo, and Benin. This digital visibility addresses the lack of formal proof of assets, which has historically hindered women's access to financial services for productive equipment like motorised tricycles. By mapping over 16,000 trees and 3,500 producers, the initiative aims to transition informal women's co-operatives into recognized enterprises and protect shea parklands.

• Environmental degradation, specifically increased burning and land clearing, has forced women shea producers to travel further into remote parklands, which increases collection costs, physical burdens, and post-harvest losses.
• Digital mapping of shea trees provides the verifiable evidence of assets needed to reduce risk for financial service providers, enabling women to finance productive equipment such as motorised tricycles to improve transport and market aggregation.
• The project has digitally recorded more than 16,000 shea trees and connected them to over 3,500 women producers across Ghana, Togo, and Benin.
