Changing with the Tides of Change: A Women's Group Journey Towards Climate Resilience

The Twezimbe Women’s Group in Uganda's Kalungu district adopted a solar power irrigation system to mitigate the impact of drought and unpredictable rainfall on their horticultural projects. Despite initial losses and challenges with land access and pests, the group diversified their crops and established a year-round production cycle to support their catering business. The group now advocates for increased financial support, capacity building for value addition, and gender-sensitive adaptation strategies.

• The Twezimbe Women’s Group adopted a solar power irrigation initiative supported by the Ugandan government, the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), and the European Union to combat the effects of drought and unpredictable rainfall patterns that hindered their ability to supply vegetables for their catering services.
• The group overcame a significant eligibility barrier by negotiating a five-year contract with a district councillor to access a 2-acre piece of land near a permanent wetland, as they did not own the required land themselves.
