Changing with the Tides of Change: A Women's Group Journey Towards Climate Resilience

This case study describes the experience of the Twezimbe Women’ Group in Uganda, which transitioned from a catering service to horticultural farming using a solar power irrigation initiative to combat climate-driven droughts and unpredictable rainfall.

• The Twezimbe Women’ Group adopted a solar power irrigation initiative in 2021 to address the impacts of climate change, specifically long dry spells and unpredictable rainfall patterns that hindered their ability to reliably supply vegetables for their catering business.
• To qualify for the irrigation initiative, the group had to secure a 2-acre piece of land near a permanent wetland, which they achieved through a five-year contract with a district councillor.
• The group faced several initial obstacles, including the high cost of agricultural inputs, crop infestation by snails due to the proximity to a wetland, and financial losses during the first season. In response, they diversified their crops from only tomatoes to include green peppers, Irish potatoes, collard greens, eggplants, and garden eggs.
• The group identified specific gender-based challenges in implementing adaptation initiatives, noting that clearing land for the pump construction and transporting mulching grass was more difficult for the women members than it would have been for men.
