Take a fluid approach to build fresh water resilience

The Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) advocates for a shift from traditional water control and recovery-based humanitarian aid toward a resilience-based approach that integrates natural water cycles and local knowledge into design and investment.

• Traditional attempts to control water through artificial solutions and infrastructure have failed and created vulnerabilities that are now being exposed as water supplies become scarcer.
• Current humanitarian and development funding models often focus on a slow return to normal after extreme weather events, which the author argues is the opposite of progress toward development goals.
• A 21st-century approach to water resilience involves designing around natural cycles and utilizing short-term tactics such as predictive models and early warning systems to help at-risk populations thrive despite recurrent challenges.
• Local and indigenous knowledge is frequently ignored in current planning and spending models, despite the fact that people in disaster-prone areas often possess the solutions to their own risks.
• The Global Resilience Partnership (GRP), convened by The Rockefeller Foundation, USAID, and Sida, focuses on building resilience in the Sahel, Horn of Africa, and South and Southeast Asia. As part of this, the GRP launched a Water Window Challenge with a $10 million commitment from the Z Zurich Foundation to provide grants of up to $1 million for innovative flood-resilience solutions.
