Nasreen Al-Amin and her organisation are building greener communities through locally-led adaptation

This case study describes the work of Nasreen Al-Amin and her non-profit organisation, Surge Africa, in implementing locally-led adaptation projects in Nigeria. It focuses on the Jeji Restoration project in Kano State, which combines landscape restoration with livelihood support for marginalised communities.

• The Jeji Restoration project was designed based on community consultations to ensure it provided both environmental restoration and economic support, specifically targeting 1,000 people affected by war and environmental conflicts through financial payments for tree plantation work.
• Nasreen Al-Amin identifies financial limitations as the primary challenge to her work and advocates for institutional support for conservation policies, stronger landscape governance, and increased financial capital for indigenous organisations beyond short-term grants.
• Through Surge Africa, Al-Amin implements community-level workshops on affordable nature-based solutions like agroecology and agroforestry, and has launched Surge X Media to use visual data and storytelling to address climate change data gaps in Africa.
