SENEGAL GREEN ECONOMY BAROMETER 2018

The Senegal Green Economy Barometer 2018, produced by IED Afrique and IUCN Senegal, assesses the country's progress toward a fair and green economy. It highlights a tension between strong GDP growth and rising absolute poverty, while detailing efforts to integrate renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and green job creation into national development frameworks like the Emerging Senegal Plan (PSE) 2035.

• Senegal has experienced steady economic growth since 2015, with GDP increasing by over 6.5% annually, including 6.9% in 2017 and a projected 7% for 2018 and 2019. This growth is primarily driven by tourism, agriculture, and public investments in infrastructure and energy via the Emerging Senegal Plan (PSE), which continues until 2035.
• Despite economic growth, poverty levels in absolute numbers have increased from 5.7 million to 6.3 million people. While the proportion of the population below the poverty line decreased slightly from 48.3% in 2006 to 46.7% in 2011, the 2016 UNDP Multidimensional Poverty index indicated that 53% of the population lived in multi-dimensional poverty, with 31% experiencing severe deprivation.
