GEC Steering Group

Minutes from the Green Economy Coalition (GEC) Steering Group meeting on October 20, 2021, detailing the planning of the 2021 Global Meeting, the departure of Director of Engagement Emily Benson, and a status update on five strategic priorities for 2021.

• The GEC planned a Global Meeting for late 2021 themed "CODE RED for nature & people: Is the COVID-19 recovery agenda up to the task?", structured around four thematic days from November 29 to December 2, followed by a members-only Coalition Day on December 3. • The Coalition Day (December 3) was designed as a "Member’s Day" to improve collaboration impact. The Steering Group decided on an "open space format" for co-creation on key questions, with goals to agree on the GEC strategy, update members on the theory of change, and discuss expansion into new geographies, collective funding, and collective policy making.
• The GEC reported a 'GREEN' status for five strategic 2021 priorities: capitalizing on green recovery (including a tracker and a structural reform paper with PIGE), building an inequality approach (launching a learning platform for social contract with UNRISD on November 10), developing an SME approach, maintaining a strong funding pipeline (100% secured for April 2021 – March 2022), and building the coalition network function.
• The GEC is expanding its regional presence through hubs, specifically noting an East African regional hub based in Uganda serving Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, as well as a hub in Brazil piloting a new approach.
• Emily Benson, the GEC’s director of engagement, announced her departure from the organization, effective February 2022.
