Green labels for a green country

This case study describes the MyHIJAU Mark, Malaysia's official green recognition system for environmentally sound products and services, which aims to transition the country toward a resource-efficient and low-carbon economy through government-led procurement and certification.

• The MyHIJAU Mark is the official green recognition system endorsed by the Government of Malaysia for products and services that meet local and international environmental standards. The criteria are designed to balance health and environmental sustainability with economic feasibility and are tailored to Malaysian conditions to ensure local compliance.
• GreenTech Malaysia, a not-for-profit organization under the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change (MESTECC), manages the promotion, verification, monitoring, and business advice for the MyHIJAU label.
• The Malaysian government uses Government Green Procurement (GGP) to drive demand for certified products, such as electric mopeds used by the police and fast food chains. Launched in 2013, the GGP leverages the public sector's contribution of approximately 15% of Malaysia's GDP to influence the private sector.
• As of the reporting date, over 4,214 items have been registered under the MyHIJAU label. Since 2017, all 25 Federal Government Ministries and their agencies have implemented Government Green Public Procurement, with a target of achieving 20% GGP by 2020.
• The development of the MyHIJAU Mark is supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH through the 'Advance SCP' global programme, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety via the German International Climate Initiative (IKI).
