The People's Accord towards a New Social Contract

The People's Accord towards a New Social Contract argues that radical structural change through new social contracts—covenants between citizens, states, businesses, and nature—is the only way to achieve a just transition and prevent societal collapse. It advocates for the use of mechanisms such as citizen assemblies, ecological constitutions, and just transition plans to rebuild trust and democratic accountability.

• The document asserts that the only method to achieve a fair and fast transition is through the creation of new social contracts, which are described as covenants between citizens, states, businesses, and nature.
• The authors argue that a successful transition requires public demand for change, the granting of consent for action, and the ability to hold institutions accountable for their mistakes and ambitions.
• The accord identifies several existing concepts and mechanisms that can be used to renew social contracts, including eco-swaraj, buen vivir, ubuntu, citizen assemblies, ecological constitutions, just transition plans, and climate charters.
