Circular Economy: a catalyst for a just and green transformation

This white paper by the Green Economy Coalition argues that transitioning to a circular economy (CE)—characterized by recycling, reusing, and refurbishing—is essential for achieving a green, just, and inclusive transition and meeting global climate and social targets.

• The global consumption of natural resources is accelerating at a rate that exceeds both economic output and population growth, creating a risk that the global community will fail to meet environmental, social, and climate targets without a transition to a circular economy.
• Despite the potential for circular economies to reduce pollution, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce waste, they are not yet fully integrated into sectoral practices or global policies due to a lack of skills, knowledge, and incentives, with industries continuing to rely on linear models.
• The Green Economy Coalition (GEC) launched a multi-year programme in 2024, funded by the European Union, specifically to increase the influence of civil society voices in the Global South to assist the transition to a circular, green, and fair economy.
