Promoting an African voice for the Taskforce on Nature-Related Disclosures (TNFD) and nature-related financial risk management

This case study describes FSD Africa's initiative to integrate the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework into the African financial sector. The program focuses on building institutional capacity, advocating for an 'African voice' in global disclosure standards, and piloting the framework with FirstRand to ensure it is fit for the local context.

• FSD Africa is implementing a multifaceted strategy to address the shortfall in natural capital financing in Africa by providing technical support, building institutional capacity, and fostering strategic partnerships to attract private investment.
• The initiative aims to ensure the TNFD framework is adapted to the African context through stakeholder engagement with regulators, corporations, and financial institutions, while specifically targeting G20 support from South Africa and outreach to Zambia, Kenya, Mauritius, and Ghana.
• FSD Africa's program has achieved significant quantitative milestones in capacity building, including 152 TNFD piloting sessions that trained approximately 600 people, 21 regulatory road mapping sessions, and 7 webinars.
• A partnership with FirstRand involved two pilot initiatives: a nature-risk assessment and stress testing exercise for the extractive and agricultural industries, and an operational readiness assessment for implementing the beta TNFD framework.
• The African Natural Capital Alliance (ANCA) serves as FSD Africa's advocacy arm to integrate natural capital into sustainable development discourse and policy engagement.
