Easing Kenya’s Transport Burden: Transforming Mobility with Innovative Electric Motorcycles

This case study describes EcoBodaa, a Kenyan tech startup that designs and manufactures electric motorcycles tailored for African road conditions. With support from Persistent Energy Capital, the company has developed locally assembled bikes with lower maintenance costs and a battery-swapping model to replace petrol-powered motorcycles in the boda boda and delivery sectors.

To mitigate default risks, the company now includes training and medical insurance, contributing Kshs 500 (USD 3.45) monthly to the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) for each rider.
• While EcoBodaa has been unable to successfully encourage women to ride boda bodas, it has integrated women into its leadership by appointing five women to lead different operations.
