Strengthening Climate Resilience and Adaptation through Financial Services: Research for CGAP’s Climate Resilience Project

This briefing describes a collaboration between CGAP and FSD Africa to develop a conceptual framework and research methodology exploring the link between financial inclusion and climate resilience. The project focuses on how financial services can help vulnerable populations adapt to climate risks, with initial testing and research conducted in Nigeria.

• CGAP is developing a climate resilience project intended to provide guidance to financial inclusion stakeholders regarding the capacity of financial services to assist vulnerable people in reducing the impact of and adapting to specific climate risks.
• FSD Africa is assisting in the co-creation and testing of a research methodology and conceptual framework to analyze the nexus between financial inclusion and climate. This framework is currently being tested in Nigeria, and CGAP intends to expand the research to at least one additional country.
• The project's objectives include generating evidence to inform the work of CGAP and FSD Africa, increasing knowledge of the coping strategies and vulnerabilities of Nigerian communities, and improving the impact of financial services on populations vulnerable to climate change.
