Africa Private Equity and Debt Programme

The Africa Private Equity and Debt Programme, running from November 2020 to March 2025, is a pan-African initiative by FSD Africa designed to increase the availability of long-term financing for social and economic sectors by mobilising private equity and debt capital, specifically targeting increased participation from local institutional investors like pension funds.

• The programme focuses on three primary pillars: establishing a facilitative regulatory environment for institutional investors, executing demonstration transactions, and enhancing stakeholder capacity through research, advocacy, and knowledge development.
• In Kenya, the programme supported the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) in finalizing a policy framework for private equity and venture capital, which was approved by the CMA board in 2021. This process was informed by a benchmarking study on regulatory options conducted by EAVCA.
• FSD Africa commissioned Lions Head Global Partners in July 2021 to study Africa's private debt markets, assessing factors such as size, regulation, and investor appetite. The study included inputs from Nigeria, Kenya, Morocco, and Ghana and was scheduled for launch on 11th October 2022 at the AFSIC conference.
• The AVCA Training Academy, a digital platform for professional development for private equity practitioners, was launched in September 2021. As of the document date, 12 modules have been launched, 10 more are under development, and the platform includes an ESG Training Series.
• The programme is supporting the co-creation of funding structures in Ghana, Tanzania, and Nigeria to encourage domestic institutional investors to invest in private equity and private debt.
