HUTAN DALAM FOKUS

This document is the first chapter of a report titled 'HUTAN DALAM FOKUS', published by the Forest Declaration Assessment. It discusses the goals and shortcomings of the New York Declaration on Forests (NYDf), highlighting the drivers of deforestation and the need for systemic policy changes to protect global forests and support indigenous communities.

• The New York Declaration on Forests (NYDf), established in 2014 by governments, companies, indigenous peoples, and civil society, aimed to reduce deforestation by half by 2020, but this target was not achieved.
• Global forest loss is estimated at 10 million hectares per year, an area comparable in size to Iceland. This loss is driven by short-term economic growth and global commodity demand, specifically seven agricultural commodities—beef, palm oil, soy, cocoa, rubber, coffee, and wood fiber—which cause more than half of tree cover loss.
• Extractive industries and large-scale infrastructure significantly impact tropical forests, with nearly 20% of intact tropical forest landscapes overlapping with mining, oil, and gas concessions.
• There is a significant gap in financial governance regarding deforestation; nearly two-thirds of the top 150 financial institutions that provide trillions of dollars to companies with high forest risk lack deforestation policies.
• Despite their role as the best managers of forest lands, indigenous and local communities remain neglected and excluded from primary decision-making processes.
